An occupational health and safety inspector needs to measure the noise level in a workshop. According to AFS 2005:16 (Swedish Work Environment Authority regulations), daily exposure must not exceed 85 dB(A) LEX,8h without hearing protection. If this limit is exceeded, the employer is obligated to take corrective action.
Before starting the measurement, the sound level meter must be VERIFIED against a known reference signal. Without such calibration, the reading can drift 2-4 dB from the true value — enough to incorrectly approve an 87 dB workplace as “85 dB” and miss a legal violation.
The sound calibrator is the device that provides this reference. The Extech 407766 generates a 1 kHz sine wave at EXACTLY 94 dB or 114 dB, with an accuracy of ±0.8 dB. Pre-measurement verification takes 30 seconds and eliminates all uncertainty regarding the instrument.
Why sound level meters drift
Sound level meters consist of microphones + electronic signal processing + calibration coefficients. All three can drift:
- Microphone sensitivity: The electrical charge on electret microphone membranes slowly leaks over the years. After 5 years, sensitivity has typically dropped by ~1-2 dB.
- Electronic drift: The current gain factor of the amplifier electronics drifts with temperature and component aging.
- Calibration coefficient drift: The instrument’s internal calibration can drift due to physical shock or extreme temperatures.
Net effect: an instrument calibrated today can show an error of 2-3 dB after 12 months without re-verification. For workplace measurements, this is unacceptable.
The physics of calibration
The calibrator consists of:
- A 1 kHz sine wave generator (quartz oscillator for high-precision frequency).
- A SPEAKER with calibrated sensitivity — generates EXACTLY the sound pressure at the microphone position corresponding to the desired dB value.
- A COUPLING HOLE where the sound level meter’s microphone is inserted. The housing is designed for Ø 12.7 mm (“0.5 inch”) or Ø 25.4 mm (“1.0 inch”) microphones.
A sine wave at 94 dB represents 1 Pa sound pressure. At 114 dB, it is 10 Pa. These values are well chosen:
- 94 dB lies MIDWAY through the typical workplace noise range (60-100 dB).
- 114 dB lies within the high-level range (100-120 dB) — for verifying instruments that measure high noise levels.
The verification procedure
- Turn on the sound level meter and let it warm up for 2-3 minutes.
- Remove the protective screen from the microphone.
- Place the calibrator’s coupling hole over the microphone. Ensure the microphone fits tightly.
- Turn on the calibrator.
- Select 94 dB (for normal range) or 114 dB (for high range).
- Wait 5 seconds until the signal is stable.
- Read the sound level meter’s value.
- If the value is EXACTLY 94.0 dB (or 114.0 dB): the instrument is calibrated. Proceed with the measurement.
- If the value drifts by 0.1-0.5 dB: adjust the sound level meter’s internal calibration potentiometer.
- If the value drifts by ≥ 1 dB: the instrument needs servicing or replacement.
This must be done BEFORE each measurement session according to ISO 9612 (workplace noise measurement), IEC 61672 (Class 1 sound level meter standard) and AFS 2005:16.
Microphone sizes: 0.5″ vs 1.0″
Sound level meters use standardized microphone sizes:
- 0.5″ (Ø 12.7 mm): Compact. Standard for portable instruments. Slightly lower sensitivity but better high-frequency response.
- 1.0″ (Ø 25.4 mm): Larger. Standard for Class 1 reference instruments. Higher sensitivity but somewhat limited at high frequencies.
The Extech 407766 has a SLIP-ON adapter that fits both sizes. One calibrator for all common instruments.
Accuracy: ±0.8 dB
This means the calibrator:
- Generates 94.0 dB within the range 93.2-94.8 dB.
- Generates 114.0 dB within the range 113.2-114.8 dB.
This accuracy meets the Class 2 standard according to IEC 60942. For Class 1 instruments (professional occupational health and safety measurement), a Class 2 calibrator is sufficient as a verification reference.
A Class 1 calibrator (±0.3 dB) requires a significantly more expensive instrument (typically 15,000-30,000 SEK). Class 2 is the standard in most workshops.
Sound pressure: dB(A) vs dB(C) vs dB(Z)
Sound level meters have different “weighting filters” for different applications:
- dB(A): A-weighted filter. Simulates human ear sensitivity (lower sensitivity to low and high frequencies). Standard for workplace noise.
- dB(C): C-weighted filter. Nearly flat across the audible spectrum. For impulse noise and machine analysis.
- dB(Z): Z-weighted (Zero-weighted). Absolutely flat, no corrections. For laboratory use.
The calibrator’s 1 kHz signal is in the frequency range where all weighting filters give an IDENTICAL reading. A 94 dB signal at 1 kHz is displayed as 94 dB(A), 94 dB(C), and 94 dB(Z) — the calibrator signal is independent of the filter setting. This is exactly why 1 kHz was chosen as the reference frequency.
LED battery indicator
The calibrator has an LED that indicates the battery is strong enough for correct signal generation. With a low battery, the speaker’s output may drop — generating 92 dB instead of 94 dB. The LED warns the operator BEFORE verification.
Critical detail for field environments where battery replacement is impractical: verify LED status BEFORE each calibration session.
