Digital force measurement has become standard in production quality control — but for many operators, it is a new type of instrument. Below are the questions that most frequently arise during introduction.
What is the difference between grams (g), newtons (N), and ounces (oz) on the display?
Grams measure mass (5000 g = 5 kg). Newtons measure force (49 N ≈ the force exerted by a 5 kg weight under standard gravity of 9.81 m/s²). Ounces are the American equivalent (176 oz ≈ 5000 g). The instrument displays the SAME physical measurement in three different units — choose the unit that matches the drawing specification. For European production, N or g is standard; for American export, oz is often used.
Can it measure both tension and compression?
Yes. The load cell sensor is bidirectional. The display shows a positive value for tension and a negative value for compression — or vice versa, configurable via the settings menu. The hook adapter included screws into the sensor for tension measurement; for compression measurement, the flat end is used directly against the workpiece.
How reliable is ±0.4% accuracy in practice?
At full scale of 49 N, ±0.4% implies a deviation of ±0.2 N. At a 10 N measurement: ±0.04 N. This is more than sufficient for most production applications (screw tightening torque verification, cable pull strength, PCB component solder strength). For calibration labs where sub-per-mille accuracy is required, specialized dynamometers with better specifications are needed.
What does the “Peak Hold” function mean?
In dynamic measurements (e.g., pulling until a solder joint breaks), the critical event occurs in a fraction of a second. The display cannot show the value fast enough for the operator to read it. Peak Hold remembers the HIGHEST value during the measurement process and displays it until the operator presses RESET. It is a standard function for destructive testing where you want to know the MAX force before failure.
What is “fast/slow response mode”?
Fast mode samples the sensor 10 times per second — good for dynamic measurements. Slow mode samples 1 time per second — good for static measurements where you want a stable display without flicker. Choose based on the nature of the measurement.
What is the “Overload” warning?
Forces exceeding 49 N can permanently damage the load cell. The instrument warns when the measured value exceeds 50 N and shuts off measurement at 60 N. If the overload warning is triggered frequently in your application, you are using the wrong instrument — 5 kg is too small; a 20 kg or 50 kg model is required.
What types of measurements is it most commonly used for?
Electronics production: solder pull strength (cables against solder pads), contact insertion force (USB, VGA, XLR connectors). Automotive: release mechanism lock force, seatbelt tension force. Plastic and rubber: material tensile strength, O-ring compression deformation. Chemical industry: bottle cap opening force, tube push compression. Mechanical workshop: spring force verification, textile fiber tearing.
The hook adapter and 5-inch extension rod — when are they needed?
The hook adapter (~15 mm hook) is mounted for tension measurement on eyelets, holes, or loop-shaped structures. The extension rod (127 mm) adds reach so the sensor can access tight spaces — particularly useful for compression measurement inside cavities (e.g., testing the depression of a button inside an electronics chassis).
How is the instrument calibrated?
The reversible display and zero button allow for a daily zero check. For periodic calibration, the instrument is sent to an accredited lab (typically annually). For self-verification, a known weight can be used: a 1 kg temperature-stabilized weight hung from the hook should display 9.81 N ±0.04.
How long do the batteries last?
6 AA batteries provide approximately 40-60 hours of continuous use. With intermittent use (measurement sessions of ~30 seconds), they last for months. The instrument warns when the battery level is low.
